Situation
Sarah had been progressing steadily throughout her career, having progressed from a junior role to managing projects and staff members. She had been enjoying the many elements of the challenge the role brought, but not the culture of the workplace, which had a negative tone. Despite this, she had gained a vast array of new skills and experiences for a high-profile employer. Unfortunately, Sarah’s role was made redundant, and although she would be receiving a financial settlement, she would be leaving the company at short notice. Sarah self-referred for employability support to assist with a smooth transition back into employment.
Task
It was important from a financial and emotional wellbeing aspect that Sarah would secure a role of similar nature within a short timeframe of no more than a couple of months. Although she had immediately started to apply for roles, she was receiving very little feedback. It was important that the support focused on not just reviewing her CV, but also reminding her of her skills and potential, after a period of working in a negative environment.
Action
It was quickly established that Sarah had the experience and skills to manage projects but had not been given suitable training by any of her previous employers. She used her time and funding effectively to enrol on a Prince 2 course, that started immediately. On reviewing her CV, it was apparent that it contained too much detail and was not tailored to specific roles or areas of work. She was able to confidently amend this herself and give greater depth to her key competencies, highlighting to potential employers the value she brings to their organisation.
Result
Sarah completed her Prince 2 qualification, ensuring that she could confidently apply for roles with the certificate that matches her skills and experience. She also had a greater understanding of the development journey she had been on and the vast range of skills she had acquired. This resulted in being invited for several interviews within a short period of time, which matched her aspirations. Sarah had the option of no less than 3 roles to choose from and returned to work within 6 weeks of leaving her previous role.
